“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who are alive.”
–Howard Thurman
I love this quote and am trying to live it. However, I still don’t know what makes me come alive. I get excited talking about a few things;
1. Theology
2. Star Wars
3. Politics
4. Personal Finance
5. Music
6. Poetry
7. Science Fiction
So I have seven things that really get me pumped when I talk about them with people. I would have to say though that Personal finance really gets my blood pumping. I just get excited about giving information to people that is going to help them succeed. So maybe I need to join the millions of other people who are financial counselors. Who knows…do you think I would be good at anything in particular? Let me know!
Here is a guy I look up to…Dave Ramsey
Of all the things that keep me up at night…money is numero uno. Not school, not death, not work, not relationship issues, nothing keeps me up as much as money worries. I think this is why most of the bible focused on money issues, because if you are like me money is always on your mind.
My wife and I have have been following the Dave Ramsey (Total Money Make Over) plan for about 5 months very seriously. I became familiar with his plan about 2 years ago but never really got focused. As he says, however, intensity is everything. While it hasn’t always been fun, it works. The concept of acting your wage and not using credit, ever! Are things the average American millionaire practices in their lives every day. The average American spends 122% of what they make, do you see a problem here?
I have had to work extra hours as well as a second job to do it but this weekend another one of my debts will be gone. I can’t tell you how much peace comes over you every time another debt goes down. With a $1000 emergency fund in place and sweat on our brows we should be out of consumer debt in January. All we will have left is a car payment and a student loan. I will probably spend the next 2 years fighting this debt off but as Dave says “Live like no one else so that later you can life like no one else”
Go ahead and click on the link I put on the right hand side. Also I have put his rss feed onto my sidebar with some great articles.
Enjoy! And happy debt killing!
So I had a dream last night of a new product that will soon be gracing the shelves of every major electronics store…or not. Here is the idea I had in my dream; A large widescreen lcd that is surrounded with a picture frame…this picture frame has a camera in it that uses face scanning technology to take the person’s face who is looking at it and place it into pictures of your choosing. So you look at it and bammo there you are in a Seahawks uniform.
How COOL is that? Well back to work…perhaps some dreaming.
Wesabe is a new web based financial software that has got me smiling. This web 2.0 application really makes managing all of your different accounts as simple as point and click. The concept of having all my accounts viewable in one area is a beautiful thing.
Along with tags, tips, and goals which link to others going through the same things as you this bad boy really gets your financial muscle flexing. ITS FREE! so go give it a try, tell them Mike sent ya!
So, would you believe it?! I am being published by Poetry.com . Apparently some people think I have something to say when it comes to the art of prose. So be it I guess… Here is a sample…
Its your world now babe
A world rumbles with birth pains
Discomfort and exhaustion mix
with small moments of relief.
Questions abound in a moment with no answers.
“When will it end?”
is asked to the god of silence.
Skin stretches, flexes, and tears.
Screams echoed by sighs, the world trembles.
A daughter is birthed, slime removed.
A world relaxes in a moment that won’t last.
The daughter coos in the warmth of its mother.
The parents cry “Its your world now babe”

This was selected out of thousands of entries. I really don’t know what to say other then, I can’t believe they really like me! I always get embarrassed with this type of thing, but I thought I would share it with you all.
Snap Snap and all that beat jazz!
Now that I figured out how to post a video to the blog, I have become video-happy!
Anyways, you will love this one. Now, this one is a bit long but trust me…sit through the whole thing. Derek Webb is an amazing artist and doing a lot to change the complacent Christianity in this country, God bless him! So without further adu’…
I find it funny that this song is about a lot of the things these people in the video do on a daily basis. hmmm
Well, I have to say that Sufjan Stevens is probably my favorite musician in the whole world. His style of music, along with the rest of asthmatic kitty records, is definitely an acquired taste but to me it sounds gorgeous.
He recently released a 5 CD (EP Length) Christmas compilation. I tell you what, you haven’t lived until you have heard some of the old favorites done by this great man. So do yourself a favor and go to www.asthmatickitty.com and pick up a copy for the Holidays.
Raising a Girl…thoughts and fears
So as some of you might know (most of you don’t) my wife and I are expecting our first child on December 14th, 2006. Her name is Merci Ann Combs and that is all I really know about her. Well actually, during an ultrasound yesterday we did see that she likes to suck her thumb quite a bit.
This whole experience has been interesting and scary at the same time. At first I was super-excited, to the point of giddyness. However, once we found out that our bundle of joy was to be a girl…I flipped. Now, one thing you have to realize about me is that I love kids (not in the MJ way) and they tend to love me back. Maybe it has something to do with me trying to be down at their level and just experiencing things like they would. I love being with kids, playing with them, and teaching them new things. I have always had more luck with the boys and that is why having a girl is a fear of mine.
My mind keeps wondering into my imagination and seeing boyfriends and driving and and and…it is quite overwhelming. So what is a dad to do? I guess I am just going to have to learn it as I go, HAVE MERCI!
